Kenya & Tanzania Explorer: A Sample Safari
A taste of what an East Africa journey with Africa Explore Safaris can look like – built around you, not a fixed date sheet.
Every safari we design is custom. The route below shows the kind of journey a Kenya and Tanzania combination safari can take – the regions, the pacing, the rhythm of days on the road versus days in camp. Think of it as a starting point, not a fixed itinerary. Your dates, camps, and pace of travel are shaped around your budget and interests when you get in touch.
The Journey at a Glance
This sample route moves through the Kenyan highlands and Rift Valley before crossing into Tanzania’s northern safari circuit – roughly two and a half weeks at a relaxed pace, though we can compress or extend it depending on how much time you have.
Nairobi and the Kenyan Highlands
Your safari begins in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and the natural gateway for travel across the country. From there, the route heads toward Amboseli, where wide plains sit beneath the snowcapped backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro and elephant herds are among the most reliably seen in Africa. A detour north through the Aberdare range adds forested slopes, waterfalls, and a change of scenery, while Buffalo Springs and the Samburu region bring an arid, remote landscape and species you won’t see further south – reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, the long-necked gerenuk.
Lake Naivasha and the Rift Valley
A stop at Lake Naivasha breaks up the driving with boat trips for hippo and birdlife, walking safaris among free-roaming giraffe and zebra, and the dramatic gorges of Hell’s Gate.
The Masai Mara
The route’s first major highlight is the Masai Mara, part of the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Rolling savannah, resident predators, and – depending on timing – the Great Migration make this one of the most iconic stretches of any East Africa safari.
Crossing into Tanzania's Serengeti
From the Mara, the journey crosses into Tanzania through the Northern Serengeti, known for river crossings during migration season, then continues south through Seronera, in the heart of the Serengeti’s year-round wildlife, before finishing in the highlands around Karatu, a relaxed base near the Ngorongoro area with markets, homesteads, and forest walks to close out the trip.
