Kruger National Park Safari Guide

Parks, Private Reserves & Sabi Sands

Kruger is not one destination – it is a public national park the size of Wales, a ring of private reserves with no fences between them, and the Sabi Sands, where leopard have been habituated to vehicles for fifty years. Which one you book changes the entire trip.

Three ways to see Kruger

Tier 1 · most affordable

Best time to visit South Africa for safari

Winter – June to September – is dry, the bush thins out and game concentrates at water. It is also cold at dawn, so bring a fleece. October to December is hot, green and excellent for newborn game and birding.

Kruger is a low-risk malaria area - but not a zero-risk one

Risk is low in the dry winter months and higher from November to April. If you would rather not give a six-year-old prophylactics, we move you to a malaria-free reserve in Zululand or the Eastern Cape and the safari is every bit as good.

The classic ten-night South Africa trip

Two hours by air separates a leopard sighting from a table in Franschhoek. It is the reason South Africa converts first-time Africa travellers better than anywhere else on the continent.

“We planned this visit to South Africa as a family vacation. Our family consisted of grandparents and grandchildren. The most impressive part about the trip was the pre-planning that was done.”

Vikram Cariapa · Google review

“We had an absolutely incredible dream vacation to South Africa… a 12-person, multi-generational trip that required extra care with planning.”

Tripadvisor review

If you have three nights or fewer, go private – you cannot afford to spend two days learning the roads. With a week and a hire car, the national park is superb value and you will see plenty.

In the Sabi Sands over three nights, very likely. Rhino are the one nobody can promise anywhere, for reasons of anti-poaching security rather than luck. Any operator who guarantees five is selling you something they cannot deliver.

Yes, and thousands do it happily every year – the main roads are tarred and the rest camps are well run. AES has chosen to focus its self-drive content on the Cape and Namibia routes instead, so we will point you at SANParks directly for a Kruger self-drive.

Fly to Nelspruit (MQP) or Skukuza (SZK) via Johannesburg – around four hours door to door including the connection. Skukuza puts you inside the park, which saves a two-hour road transfer at the far end.
