Self Drive The Cape, Garden Route & Whale Coast
Either a Guided Tour or a Self Drive option. The roads are excellent, the signage is in English and the distances between good places to stop are short. What you do need is a route that does not waste a single day – and someone who has pre-booked the lodges that fill up first.
The route, stage by stage
Table Mountain, Boulders Beach penguins, the Cape Point loop and one long lunch on the Atlantic seaboard. Pick the car up on the morning you leave – parking in the city is a nuisance you do not need.
Do the Wine Tram on your first full day so nobody has to drive. Book estate lunches in advance – the good ones are full weeks out in season.
Take the coastal road, not the N2. If you are travelling between July and October the whales alone justify the detour, and Gansbaai’s marine safari is forty minutes further on.
The safari leg. Aura One found Sanbona Luxury Safari from Cape Town live on the AES site – it slots into this stage exactly as-is.
The Garden Route proper – forest, lagoon, Tsitsikamma. Go out via Route 62 and Oudtshoorn’s caves, come back along the N2 coast so you drive both.
A one-way rental fee is usually cheaper than two extra days of driving back. We arrange the drop-off and the connecting flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Which side of the road? | Left. Automatic transmission is worth the supplement if you are not used to it. |
| Do I need a 4x4? | No. Every road on this route is tarred. A comfortable sedan or small SUV is right. |
| International driving permit? | Not required for English-language licences, but some rental desks ask. Bring one if it is easy. |
| Is it safe to drive? | Yes, with the usual sense: drive in daylight, lock the doors in traffic, do not leave bags visible. |
| Best months? | Oct-Apr for the Cape. The Garden Route is genuinely year-round; the Whale Coast peaks Jul-Oct. |
Why book a self-drive through us at all?
The lodges that sell out
Sanbona, the good Franschhoek guest houses and the Plettenberg Bay places worth staying at are booked months ahead in season. We hold them.
One number when something goes wrong
A flat tyre outside Swellendam on a Sunday is a different problem when Quinton is an hour and a half away and answers his phone.
The guided days worth guiding
Drive yourself between towns; take a guide for the Winelands and the Cape Peninsula day so nobody spits out good wine.
Three live products slot into this route – the safari leg, and two guided wine days:
“Quinton was very helpful, organized, and knowledgeable” – a 30-person Cape Town retreat, planned and hosted end to end.
