Tanzania Safari Guide
Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Zanzibar
Everything an American traveller actually needs to decide: which airport, how many internal flights, when the migration is where, what it costs, and whether to bolt Zanzibar onto the end. No brochure language.
01 · Getting there from the United States
There is no direct flight from North America. Practically everyone routes through Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul or Addis Ababa into Kilimanjaro International, which is the right airport for the northern circuit. Dar es Salaam is for Zanzibar and the southern parks, not the Serengeti.
Budget one full day each way. Arrive into Kilimanjaro in the evening, sleep in Arusha, and fly into the Serengeti the next morning – attempting to connect the same day is how people lose a day of safari to a missed bag.
02 · Where the migration is, by month
The herds move in a clockwise loop and the timing shifts with the rain, so treat this as a strong pattern rather than a timetable. What matters is choosing a camp in the right part of the Serengeti for your month – a fixed lodge in the south in July is a long way from the action.
Calving. Half a million wildebeest born in three weeks, with predators in constant attendance. The most under-rated time to come, and rates are lower than August.
Green, empty and cheap. Some camps close, roads get sticky, and the light is extraordinary. For a second safari, not a first.
Grumeti and then the Mara River crossings. Peak season, peak rates, and worth every cent if crossings are what you came for. Book a year ahead.
Crossings continue into October, then the short rains pull the herds south again. November is quiet, green and good value.
03 · The four places worth your nights
Serengeti
Three or four nights minimum, in the right sector for your month. Mobile camps follow the herds.
Ngorongoro Crater
One full crater day is enough. Extraordinary, busy, and the only reliable black rhino sighting in the north.
Tarangire
Baobabs and enormous dry-season elephant herds. Frequently skipped, frequently the surprise favourite.
Zanzibar
Stone Town plus a beach. The decompression chamber after eight days of 5:30am starts.
04 · What a Tanzania safari costs
Three things drive the number: season, whether you fly or drive between parks, and the style of camp. Park fees alone are a significant, non-negotiable cost – the Serengeti and Ngorongoro charge per person per day.

05 · Adding Zanzibar
A 90-minute flight from the Serengeti puts you on the Indian Ocean. Do the safari first and the beach second – nobody wants to leave a beach for a 5:30am game drive. Note that Zanzibar is Muslim-majority: modest dress away from the resorts, and Ramadan affects restaurant hours.
06 · Practical questions
Do Americans need a visa for Tanzania?
Yes, and US passport holders are usually issued a multiple-entry visa. Apply online in advance rather than on arrival – the queue at Kilimanjaro after a long-haul flight is not how you want to start. We send the current link with your confirmation.
What vaccinations do I need?
Speak to a travel clinic six weeks before you fly. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the northern circuit and Zanzibar, and a yellow fever certificate may be required depending on your routing and any stopovers.
Fly between parks, or drive?
Fly, if the budget allows. The road from Arusha to the central Serengeti is a full day on corrugated gravel; the flight is 90 minutes. Driving does let you see Tarangire and the crater en route, which is a genuine trade-off worth discussing.
Is Tanzania or Kenya better for a honeymoon?
Tanzania, narrowly, because Zanzibar is right there. A Serengeti mobile camp followed by five nights on the north-east coast is one of the best honeymoon shapes in Africa, and it is why “tanzania honeymoon safari” carries the highest cost per click on our entire keyword list.
