Namibia Desert Explorer
Tour Description
Your Safari Director will meet you once you have completed the immigration procedures at the Hosea Hutako International Airport outside of Windhoek.
We load up your gear in our tour vehicle and depart immediately heading in a southerly direction towards the town of Mariental. We avoid the capital city of Windhoek this morning opting to take the more scenic drive through the spectacular Namibian landscapes along the edge of the beautiful Kalahari Desert.
It is a four-hour drive from the airport to the Kalahari Anib Lodge and we check in on arrival and you may enjoy a light lunch and a swim in the pool. The daytime temperatures are really high in Namibia so the swimming pool is going to be a popular pastime as we travel through the desert landscapes.
This afternoon you will explore the area on a wonderful Sunset Drive of three hours to find the iconic Oryx Antelope and other species of wildlife that inhabit this semi-arid area. We return to the lodge after viewing the spectacular African Sunset for a great dinner and you can get a good night's sleep to recover from the long flights.
Our route takes us further south today to the Fish River Canyon which is the second-largest canyon in the world. It is over 160 km long and up to 27 km wide and only surpassed by the Grand Canyon in the USA.
Our lodge, the Canyon Village Lodge is located a few minute's drive from the entrance to the Fish River Canyon so we will stop at the lodge for you to have lunch, and then we will visit the canyon viewpoint in the afternoon.
Our lodge is set among the beautiful rocky outcrops overlooking a very large valley giving you a fantastic opportunity to get spectacular landscape images, especially at sunset.
Your expansive dinner is served in the restaurant and you may sit out on the terrace around the firepit after dinner to do some stargazing in this area that has virtually no light pollution.
This morning we retrace our route for about an hour keeping a sharp lookout for the Cape Mountain Zebra, Springbok, Greater Kudu and Ostrich that live on these plains.
We then head in a westerly direction of the Atlantic Coastline and reach our lodge at the town of Aus located on the edge of the white sand desert. This area from Aus to the coast was once the "Spergebiet" or the Forbidden Area while this was still a German Colony prior to the first world war.
The reason for it being declared a forbidden area is because diamonds were discovered along the railway tracks leading to Luderitz which was the country's only port at that time. The German authorities declared the area the "Spergebiet" in order to keep the prospective diamond hunters away while they exploited this discovery.
This afternoon we drive into the desert to find the wild feral Desert Horses of the Namib that live here and you can do some hiking in the surrounding hills.
Enjoy the spectacular scenery today as we drive through the NamibRand Nature Reserve on our way to the red sand desert at Sossusvlei.
We arrive at our lodge located close to Sesriem at lunchtime. We may check in to our rooms and then go to the Sossusvlei Lodge to have some lunch. We will have our included meals, dinner tonight, and breakfast tomorrow, here at Sossusvlei Lodge.
There are scenic flights over the desert operated from the airstrip close by and this is an opportunity for you to see the enormous dune belt from the air. Or you may choose to relax around the pool after the long dusty drive this morning.
This is without a doubt the most exciting day of your trip. We have an early breakfast and enter the Namib Naukluft Park when the gates open at 07h00. We drive down the Tsauchab River Valley to Dune 45 that is the most photographed dune in the world. If you have the energy you have the opportunity to climb to the top of the 80 meter-high red sand dune.
We continue on down the valley for a further 20 km and reach the point where we have to leave our vehicle and take the special 4x4 transfer over the dunes to Sossusvlei. We explore the area on foot and then hike over another dune to visit Dead Vlei dotted with petrified Acacia trees that are over 900 years old.
After exploring the amazing red sand dunes we return to the entrance of the park and do a short guided tour of Sesriem Canyon to view the amazing sediment formations that have been exposed by water flooding through the gorge.
You will be happy to get back to the lodge after this exciting morning to have a swim and relax until it is time to go for our dinner at Sossusvlei Lodge.
Our journey today takes us through stunning desert scenery. We cross over the Tropic of Capricorn and then drive through the very unusual rocky landscape of Kuiseb Pass.
We reach the main commercial port of Namibia, Walvis Bay, where we stop at the Walvis Bay Lagoon to see the many bird species in the area that include Flamingoes and Pelicans.
From here it is a short drive along the coast to the adventure capital of Namibia, Swakopmund. We do a short orientation tour of the town with its amazing german architecture and then check-in at our hotel.
There are many adventure activities to choose from and we can visit the Adventure Centre so that you may acquaint yourself with all the options available.
There are many fine restaurants to choose from in Swakopmund and dinner is therefore not included while we are here.
Today you can enjoy some of the fantastic activities available to satisfy the most fervent adrenaline junkie to the those that prefer the more leisurely excursions.
Your Safari Director will assist you with all the information you need to make full use of your time in the town of Swakopmund.
We check out of our hotel this morning after enjoying a very leisurely breakfast. This is the last day of the itinerary and we through the beautiful and ever-changing landscapes of Namibia as we move inland away from the cold Atlantic coastline.
We stop in the town of Okahandja for a welcome break and you may browse through the very well-known Okanhandja Craft Market.
We continue on to Windhoek that is the capital of Namibia. There is a rich history to be seen in the architecture of the buildings in the historical town center. We do a guided tour of the scenic areas and then we head out to the airport so that you may connect with your onward flights.
